Angela,
I was in Xilitla a few weeks ago for 5days (then spent 656 days in Angangueo, Michoacan visiting the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries) and now am back home in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

You can get a bus from Queretaro directly to Xilitla. Takes about 7-8 hrs. About 250 pesos. Go to the main Bus Station (The middle Building)
I stayed at Posada Dona Tere, which was perfect for me and my needs.

Las Pozas is about 1/2hr walk from Xilitla. I would walk there early morning and get back to my hotel 1 – 2 pm and walk back around 4pm for a few hrs. You can get a taxi from town but as I didnt do this, no idea how much.
I will be back there probably in November.
Another wonder of the world.

what an interesting forum!! we are planning to visit Cuba after a couple of weeks from now, and we will be transiting in Mexico city, how does the process work, do we have to roam around the airport or they will keep us in one place and we will not be allowed to leave from that area.

Must wear long pants and closed shoes or you won’t get in. tour is only 20 mins, and almost always in Spanish. Gift shop is mediocre.

If you ever get a chance to visit Santa Fe De La Laguna, in Michoacan, please email me and tell me all about it.
I am planning on going there sometime in the reasonable future and would like a little preview.
I understand that the only place to stay is in a “Hostel”, ran by local women. Not to mention, how to get there from Morelia airport, without having to pay an arm and a leg.

If you end up buying one of those bamboo bikes, please be sure to review it after you’ve had a chance to give it some uso rudo. I saw the guys who make them at a bike fair a few months ago, and the bikes looked pretty good, but I did have some concerns about how well they’d hold up to riding in the rain, among other things.

I just bought 4 of these whistles in Progress, Mexico this week. It literally took me all week and weekend to get the sound down. Not only can you do a cat but I got one down that sounds like a dolphin in distress. All the vendors were walking around doing monkey and bird sounds. A definite jungle theme. The beauty is no matter what you do a persons first reaction is laughter because its a sound like you’ve never heard. I bought mine for $.50 each compared to the $4 each he wanted originally. Mexico bargaining!

I took a similar trip back in December except we did the whole Cabo-La Paz-Todos Santos trip in one day! We didn’t get to spend much time in Todos Santos because it was getting dark and we went to Playa Cerritos for a beautiful dinner instead, seems like we didn’t miss too much though.

Thanks Julie for making me remember my childhood. I’m from Mexico City but have lived in Sydney for the last 11 years and one of those things I miss the most in Mexico is the chance to celebrate independence day. My parents used to take us to see the street vendors in the zocalo and alameda before night time and we used to celebrate “el grito” in the northwest part of the city (Azcapotzalco). I used to wear a fake mustache as an 8 year old.
Another tip for el grito that I could add is: go to one of the other “delegaciones” in Mexico City and you’ll see street vendors and a fair with rides. There would be crowds but no the massive crowds you find in El Zocalo.

I would like to know where can I find these whistles. I was in Progresso 10 years back and brought a few while visiting in Mexico Trying to look for these whistles w/o visiting Progresso online.

One of the many surprises about Mexico was its wines. I enjoyed a few from the Baja region, but am always welcome to branch out and try new wineries. Glad to see you did.

And Freixenet may not be my favourite Cava from Spain, but it’s a decent value and wouldn’t mind a glass right now, let alone sampling the Mexican made version.

Glad to find another cheese fanatic! Interesting post- can’t wait to get my hands on some Finca VAI cheese… Have you ever been to the Feria de Quesos in Cholula? I think it was about 2 weeks ago, heard it’s a queso-lovers paradise. Haven’t been, but it is on my list!

For any of your readers wondering what such market may exist in Atlanta….the Buford Highway Farmers Market is the answer you’ve been waiting for!! $.70/avocado…and that’s just the beginning

they even have conchas and a tortilleria….maybe you should rethink DC Julie

(1) I am surprised you did the markup of the receipt with a pen, rather than using some sort of automated script in Excel, or at least a pivot table or something.

Yep, great cheese and a pastoral petting zoo! Doesn’t get much better than that…particularly when Queretaro, Tequisquiapan, and vinyards are close at hand!
