When I look at

your blog site in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it

Nice threadless t-shirt :D
I think you were dressed pretty normal for Mexico, I mean, in summer I only wear sandals... and dresses and also skirts. But well, never been in Sonora.
I liked to see some pictures of the markets, and the food, it makes me wanna go there :D.
And well, though I've had visa for going to the USA all my life, I've never gone farther than the border, so don't know much of what they wear, much more that what I see on tv series, but if they are like Mexico ones, then I should not trust them, haha. But I've been in central and south America, and I think what really makes you look like a tourist is wearing shorts and tennis shoes, and looking like you're going on a safari ^^.
Well, I just wanted to say: nice pictures! Nice blog! And keep visiting places and eating delicious food :D

Julie, I am way late to read this post, but I wanted to tell you how touched I was by this post. I commend you for having the strength to do an altar the first year after losing your mom. It has taken me 4 years to be able to do one for my father, whom I lost in 2008. Your tribute to your mom (and your kick a** sugar skulls, must try to copy next year) are an amazing Mexican-style celebration of life, not death. Please keep this blog going even if the posts are few and far between. I really enjoy reading it and wish you the best of luck in everything you do. Appreciate your humor more than you realize! Angie in DF

Julie it is nice to see another crazy person. I lost my 21 year old daughter Ariel last April. Ariel had sugar skull tattoos, so this was my inspiration for her memorial. I hope you had the same sense of purpose that I experienced while creating sugar skulls. I think they would be very proud of us. I am planning on attending Days of the Dead in Mexico this year, any suggestions for locals near water.
How are you holding up ? xo

[...] The Mercado Jamaica is much smaller, with several areas for car parking interspersed, both vendors’ and customers’. Pickup trucks come in loaded w/ flowers to wholesale to the many florists and flower arrangers. I can’t imagine the desperate feeling of coming to town and sitting around a truck all day, hoping someone will buy your wares. Almost every florist has something unique, does something a little differently, so they have something to show off. See http://www.midwesternerinmexico.com/2009/01/19/mercado-de-jamaica-the-flower-market-of-mexico-city/ [...]

Julie it was so nice to read your tribute to your mom. I still have tears in my eyes. I'm sure your mom was so proud of you! Having gotten the chance to get to know you personally I feel honored that I had a chance to know you while you were living here in Mexico City! I used to think that Dia de los Muetos was kind of creepy but now I realise what a beautiful celebration it is. Instead of mourning the loss of the people we love, we celebrate their life!

I am so happy to hear you're pregnant and are bringing more Julie's into this world!
Stay in touch.
Un beso,
Ronit
p.s.Thanks so much for making me such a beautiful blog! You have changed my work forever! xoxo

What a beautiful tribute to your mom! I had planned to build an altar for my grandmother, who passed away in December 2011, but with my suegra's sudden passing in late September, we decided to wait until next year. The pain and loss is still too fresh for us all.

I think it is so cool that you made your own sugar skulls. This is the first year in the twelve that I've lived here, that I've seen so many sugar skulls sold in our pueblito.

I was googling sugar skulls for my first Dia de los Muertos celebration I'm hosting many friends in our barn tomorrow night. My mother died of ALS 19 years ago, and I was struck how the symbolism of the objects on the altar, the tearlessness, the fun for my kids, the time of year before the holidays may be just the thing I need to get through (again). The picture of your mom reminds me of mine. Bless our moms.

I just stumbled upon your blog and this post brought me to tears. I'm sure your mom is smiling down at the celebration.

Your sugar skulls are amazing! I'm very impressed. I really want to start celebrating "Dia de los Muertos" so my son can begin to understand what it is all about.

Take care!

Julie, what a really wonderful memorial for your Mom. Like many here, I had tears in my eyes when I finished reading it. Your skulls are beautiful and it's wonderful to see you with the 'bump'.

Hasta pronto...

Very nice post. I am sorry for the loss of your mother.... I lost my stepmom last year to ALS, and I truly believe she knew/knows how much she is loved, and how much she is missed. Your Mom knows :)

Very good job on the skulls!! I am not artistic at all, and wouldn't dare try. Love the colours.

HI, as a Mexican living in the US it makes me feel very proud to see that some on my traditions are making other people happy also the fact that you found our tradition inspiring and reassuring, makes me feel very good. I lost my mom to cancer 3 years ago and every year since I have been making calaveritas for the Altar, this year one friend helped me to do 50! because I'm putting the altar at my school! it is crazy to do all that work even for a Mexican! but it really makes me feel good!, thanks so much for the post! and Thanks for adopting my tradition!

My Dear Julie...what a wonderful honor of love you have given in your Mother's memory. This past year I have remembered her often...shed some tears of love missing her in so many ways. Marcia's friendship to me will be everlasting in my heart...and especially how her humor always made me laugh. I am so grateful to God that the Carmann Family has touched my life.

Julie, I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. I never got to meet her, but I knew she was a special lady, because she produced you! What a lovely tribute to her.

You have inspired *me* to make sugar skulls from scratch. I'm taking a course in a few days at Esgamex here in DF. (But I will have the Internet in the back of my mind.)

For your first altar, you really knocked this one out of the park.

Hi! Very informative site! Juat wanted to mention that when the aerotren is not running there is a shuttle bus from T2 to T1 and back agian. It costs 15 pesos, and you find it outside the southwest (left if you are facing the gate entrances) end of T2-- just ask anyone in a uniform and they will direct you. You may have to wait a few minutes, but the bus is clean, there was no boarding pass or ticket requirement ( I was there to meet a friend @ night), and my driver was courteous and helpful.

Hello - I found your comments very helpful. We have a different situation however. We fly into Mexico City from LAX. We have a 5 hour layover and then we board Iberia Airlines for Madrid. Do we have time to leave the security area? I assume we still do the immigration thing. Do we also re-check our luggage? Thank you very much.

I like your blog, I was in DF over christmas 2011, also. (I'm also blonde/blue eyed/US citizen) I was just there again last week.

I totally agree with you about the animal section of the Sonora market, bird flu/other weird diseases are *exactly* what I was thinking when I was in there, too. That place is pretty horrifying.I got out pretty quickly.

Hello there!

My name is Malte Zeeck, and I am with InterNations.org. I really enjoyed reading your fantastic blog! I think expats in Mexico and around the world could really gain some great insights [and have a few good laughs] on this page. The quality of the blog in general is very convincing, which is why I would love to feature you and your writing on the Recommended Blog on Mexico section on InterNations.org
Not only do we feature and link to your blog prominently; we also would like to hear from you directly in our questionnaire! We have also designed a link badge for your blog.
If you are interested, please feel free to contact me via email: maltezeeck@internations.org
Best,

Thanks so much for sharing your favorite spots in Mexico. It is refreshing to read some positive comments on Mexico instead of the main stream media's continual focus on violence.

Angela,
I was in Xilitla a few weeks ago for 5days (then spent 656 days in Angangueo, Michoacan visiting the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries) and now am back home in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

You can get a bus from Queretaro directly to Xilitla. Takes about 7-8 hrs. About 250 pesos. Go to the main Bus Station (The middle Building)
I stayed at Posada Dona Tere, which was perfect for me and my needs.

Las Pozas is about 1/2hr walk from Xilitla. I would walk there early morning and get back to my hotel 1 - 2 pm and walk back around 4pm for a few hrs. You can get a taxi from town but as I didnt do this, no idea how much.
I will be back there probably in November.
Another wonder of the world.

Hi there,
what an interesting forum!! we are planning to visit Cuba after a couple of weeks from now, and we will be transiting in Mexico city, how does the process work, do we have to roam around the airport or they will keep us in one place and we will not be allowed to leave from that area.

Thanks

[...] My boyfriend and I visited the Huasteca Potosina in March 2010. Taking a bus from Mexico City, we arrived directly into Xilitla. It was early morning as we made the hike south of the city’s center up the lush mountains towards the Castle. Because of the high altitude, the fog still lingered and we pretty much had the place to ourselves. For the ultimate English-Xilita resource, (how to get to Xilita, what’s the distances, where to eat, stay and do) check out this link [...]

If you ever get a chance to visit Santa Fe De La Laguna, in Michoacan, please email me and tell me all about it.
I am planning on going there sometime in the reasonable future and would like a little preview.
I understand that the only place to stay is in a "Hostel", ran by local women. Not to mention, how to get there from Morelia airport, without having to pay an arm and a leg.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings,
Steven in Texas

I am also from Nebraska (Omaha), my parents from farm families, so there were so many aspects of your family stories that really resonated. I live in Dallas now but would like to make extended visits to Mexico one day. One thing though- I wish I could sign up to receive your blog updates by email? Love your writing!

If you end up buying one of those bamboo bikes, please be sure to review it after you've had a chance to give it some uso rudo. I saw the guys who make them at a bike fair a few months ago, and the bikes looked pretty good, but I did have some concerns about how well they'd hold up to riding in the rain, among other things.

I loved your post about Sancocho, and thanks for the link to my site. I want to clarify that the time in the recipe is not for that kind of baby bathtub-size sancocho, I can definitely see that your friend spent more than 90 minutes on that. I want to clarify that the time in the recipe is not for that kind of baby bathtub-size sancocho, I can definitely see that your friend spent more than 90 minutes on that. My hat’s off to her for undertaking such thing.

Hi Julie. I just found your blog (via a link on twitter) yesterday and have been reading it non-stop. I just wanted to tell you that I really like your post and I'm glad you documented your time in el DF. I've always wanted to visit el DF but didn't because of some trepidation I felt. Your blog (along with others I've come across) has opened my eyes and now plan on visiting in 2012. Thanks again for such an awesome blog.

Lovely post! We just arrived in Mexico for a two year gig, and we are hoping to catch a posada while here for Christmas. Is this something that is only done in family homes or are there public posadas? Thx!

I just bought 4 of these whistles in Progress, Mexico this week. It literally took me all week and weekend to get the sound down. Not only can you do a cat but I got one down that sounds like a dolphin in distress. All the vendors were walking around doing monkey and bird sounds. A definite jungle theme. The beauty is no matter what you do a persons first reaction is laughter because its a sound like you've never heard. I bought mine for $.50 each compared to the $4 each he wanted originally. Mexico bargaining!
